Calling volunteers
Volunteers play a vital role in Sheffcare’s work; they are our little ‘army’ of people who give of their own time (as much or as little as they wish) to support and enhance the work of our Sheffcare teams. They are a really important extra resource who provide companionship and conversation to the elderly people of Sheffield, helping to prevent loneliness and isolation.
If you are wondering what being a volunteer involves, first and foremost you will not be asked to do a carer’s duties. For you, it is all about simply having the time to spend with someone - for a chat, a game of cards or dominoes, reading a book together, discussing the news or a favourite T.V programme... Some volunteers also provide a little pampering, such as a hand massage or nail painting, which many of our residents really enjoy and appreciate.
As a volunteer with Sheffcare, you will be given a clear role, guidelines, ongoing support and a team leader to refer to - don’t worry, you won’t be thrown in at the deep end!
You can give as much or as little of your time as you wish and, however much is possible for you, it will be highly valued by our residents and staff alike.
Many volunteers are surprised just how enjoyable volunteering with Sheffcare is. What starts out as a wish to give unselfishly of oneself and one’s time becomes something much more - a
rewarding role which give rise to great satisfaction and new bonds of friendship. Firm friendships are formed not only between volunteers and our staff but also between volunteers and our residents. Many volunteers tell us that the relationships they have built with elderly residents have enriched their own lives - they value the wisdom, appreciate the humour and love the anecdotes.
It’s a busy two way street, filled with memories, care and affection - and mutual appreciation.
