Case Study Roger Lee

Carer Driver at Castelayn Residential Home

I was a foundry worker for 44yrs before I joined SheffCare. I had been made redundant and wasn't sure what to do next.  My daughter suggested that I might suit a caring role.  I made a list of the skills I had which included those that I had gained volunteering for the St Johns Ambulance.  I started by working as a 'Bank Carer' at Knowle Hill Residential Home, another SheffCare home, which meant that I would cover other staff at short notice if they were off sick or unable to work for any reason.  I really enjoyed the social side of the role, having a chat with residents and the day care users.    After gaining experience in the care role I started to explore other roles within SheffCare.

When the role of Carer Driver came up I jumped at the opportunity.  I realy enjoy the job as it can be different every day, and I get the chance to meet a range of people throughout the week, no two days are the same.  When I've had a good crack with the residents and day care users, it makes the day worthwhile, I know they look forward to seeing me and that makes me feel good.

The support I have had from my supervisor has really helped me to settle into, what is a really different role for me.  I am confident, comfortable and happy in my day to day work and I can't imagine doing anything else.
